Dental Care

Dental care should be a part of your furry friend’s daily routine. Routine dental visits keep your pet’s teeth clean and their overall mouth healthy. At Don Head Village Animal Clinic we are licensed and experienced to safely perform all dental procedures for your pets. We offer regular dental cleanings, removal of tartar, gum disease treatment and extractions.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is also referred to as gum disease. When bacteria mixes with saliva and leftover food particles in the mouth it forms plaque. Plaque is a sticky film that covers their teeth. If the film is not brushed away it hardens and forms tartar. The bacteria in the mouth multiplies and breaks down gum tissue. This leads to inflamed gums and sometimes tooth loss. To determine how severe the disease is we use dental X-rays to see beneath the gum line and detect other oral issues.

What are signs of periodontal disease?

In order to catch periodontal disease in the early stages you must be vigilant of your pet’s oral health. The signs that you should look out for are:

1. Excessive drooling
2. Bad breath
3. Loose teeth
4. Red or swollen gums
5. Yellow or brown buildup on their teeth

Please contact our veterinary team for an appointment if you notice any of the signs. Don’t hesitate to call us at 905.707.9059.

Is anesthesia used during a dental cleaning?

Yes, we administer anesthesia to perform dental cleanings. Without anesthesia the procedure would be uncomfortable and traumatic for your furry pal. Anesthesia allows us to clean their mouth thoroughly without any disruption.
